After a sabbatical term in Italy during 1992, Victoria made many subsequent study trips, eventually setting up a studio on the Giudecca, Venice, in 2003.

Venice would come to occupy an important place in Victoria’s work. Her early paintings of it drew on this palimpsest quality: the painted surface was layered and distressed as if it were itself bearing the effects of time.
